Mara Jade WIP by lyssophobe Mara Jade WIP by lyssophobe
Perhaps the most compelling of all the characters in the extended Star Wars universe, Mara Jade, who first appeared in Timothy Zahn's Heir To The Empire. I've been trying to do something substantial with this character for over 10 years now (lots of now-embarrassing near-hits), but I think I've finally got her pegged.

Lightsaber turned out better than I expected. I'm still a little wonky on the hair details and having a difficult time deciding whether or not to add gloves.

Looking forward to getting her into an actual scene now.

I think its great. The LS seems a bit thin and short. The length might be due to perspective of the render, but I think it would be better if it had the thickness of the handle.

Thank you! I know - the perspective on that saber blade drives me nuts, too...but I really do think it's just the angle. It's the exact same mesh I used for the sabers in [link], and those look right to me.

LOL - I'll fiddle with it (trust me...no one questions me after the fact more than I do), but when I look at reference material like this, I'm thinking the problem may be that they're a bit short and need to taper more.

I figure I have about 200 "so-and so with lightsaber" pics left in me, so I'll have plenty of opportunities to get it right. Thanks for prodding me into looking at the ref material again!

Thank you! She's definitely still a work in progress. I've got the gloves added in the follow up pic; still looking for a conforming hood/shawl that matches her description from the Zahn books.

haha, don't worry, I have a few unhealthy obsessions too, just not with StarWars. ( at least not since the time Lucas made the 3 prequels and ruined it for me forever!)
Although I heard somewhere that they are planning to get the original cast for the sequels. That might make me swing back :)
Cheers!

If not spoiling you mean not telling me that Mara Jade gets murdered by her own nephew (I hate you, Jacen), then too late. Poor Ben

True. I still like the picture. And to think I loved Jacen. Geez. All my favorite characters either go bad or die: Anakin Skywalker, Jacen Solo, Anakin Solo...it's a sad pattern.

The blade actually is already standard length; the angle causes the illusion that it's not. Bugs me, too.

Refrence you comment on my image and you stating you cannot get close to realism... LIAR!!!

This looks absolutly amazing, I'd maybe have upped the specular of the outfit a little and lowered the bump (looks a little too large), but the flesh, hair, eyes and her overall pose and expression look fantastic! :)

LMAO - Let's drop the pretense that I'm even in your league. I'm not.

Thanks for your kind critique and suggestions, though. I do plan to come back to this character, so I'll certainly incorporate your thoughts into whatever comes next. Thank you again! :headbang:

Awesome!
One day, I too thought it create 3D. You are ahead of me. :)
Very good, but I think the face is not quite it. And need to work on clothing torso. There is a lack of details.

Thank you! I have struggled with the face somewhat; I'm of the opinion that the models used for the "official" Lucasfilm-approved book and other print work have been far more generic than I originally pictured Mara while reading about her...so I've tried to go with a more "realistic" redhead look for her...but I do agree that her facial features are a teensy bit harsh in this incarnation.

She's something I'll probably continue to fiddle with for years to come. :nerd:

Thanks again for the kind thoughts!

I agree. I have a similar problem.I did model Ahsoka Tano. Did, but the ball is not perfect. Then I started making the model perfect. I did a lot of things. But always leave it, I have a lot of other problems and work ... Thus, the model is up to now.Still, I started making models Bane, Ventress and clones (Fett and others) ... But all the cast. But the years pass ... Do not know when I'll do it?But I work in 3DS MAX. I do not like the stereotyped and cardboard DAZ and silvered. However, I like to steal from them textures and models of people.

About the person of Mary. I like the picture of Darren Tan. I think it's like out there, and charm, and appearance are transmitted. [link]

Thank you! This was pre-gloves (which I think added quite a bit)...and every time I see her in Lucasfilm-approved imagery, she's got that hooded cowl, which makes me want to add that somehow. We shall see. LOL

Thank you very much for your kind comment!

Great character render. I think she works great without gloves - breaks up the outfit. The foreshortening effect gives the lightsaber an unfortunately small appearance, but otherwise it turned out great. I love what you can do with lights and materials in Lux.

Thanks again, yo! The scene/pose I'm working on will have the lightsaber held at complete vertical, so it should avoid that "scared turtle" effect that's going on with this angle. I went back through reference material on the character (book covers, Star Wars wiki, etc.) and will probably at least try the gloves.

The lightsaber should be fun in a darker environment, too; the blade is actually a light-emitting object in Lux, so it should have that nice color cast-off that you see in the movies and character promo shots.

There's no reason gloves can't work. I assume you mean long gloves? I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in there because I often remove gloves for final renders because I decide it whoever I'm rendering from whatever angle works better without.
